This month, we wanted to feature our endangered Humpback Whales, or K oholā. Whale Season in Hawaii is from December to May. Every year, the whales migrate from Alaska to the warmer Hawaiian Islands to birth their young. In Hawaiian culture, their return is viewed more as a homecoming rather than a visit, and since they are born in Hawaiian waters, they are kama`aina (native born).
Hawaii used to have a whaling industry in the early 1800's. This continued for some decades and unfortunately negatively impacted the population of Humpback Whales. It became illegal to hunt whales in 1973, and these whales were then marked as an endangered species. Now, there are many tours today that allow locals and tourists alike to relish in the beauty of these creatures!
Our March boxes are filled with items that will remind you of these amazing gentle giants and our beautiful Pacific Ocean. Be sure to tag us on Instagram so we can feature you on our stories and posts. Mahalo for supporting local businesses in Hawaii.SEE WHAT'S INSIDE
